Use of Mathematics in Everyday Applications

Parents and students, do you think that mathematics is an important tool for everyday applications? If so what topics(addition, subtraction, algebra concepts, etc.) are utilized?

  1. Yes I believe that mathematics is an important tool for everyday applications. Thinking through my daily routine, I use addition and subtraction when I exercise in the morning by counting steps, calories, miles ran, etc. When I am cooking and shopping for groceries I add, subtract, multiply to measure. In my art projects, I am constantly measuring and making grid patterns which uses addition, subtraction and multiplication as well.

  2. While I use math everyday in my job as a microbiologist (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to do calculations for making buffers and dilutions, my favorite daily use of math is when I use multiplication to calculate the percent off I will receive when I find something on sale!

  3. I believe one of the most important skills learned in high school mathematics is deeper than methods but of higher level thinking skills, the ability to analyze and apply. Often times we hear students ask, "How will this ever help me in life?" I remind students often that you may not employ the methods learned in mathematics, but you will most likely use the higher level thinking skills associated with high school math.

  4. I think basic math skills are needed to function in most jobs. More specialized math skills (higher order) mathematics are job specific and if utilized on the "job", the worker's knowledge is supplemented with manuals, computers, and collaborative staff efforts.

  5. Basic math skills are definitely utilized in every day life. Any type of counting involves addition and subtraction: Counting calories, time, money, etc. Math itself, as much as it pains me to say it, is inevitably tied into every day life, and even the rate at which your car accelerates and stops. Fractions are used daily in measuring a quarter of an inch, or half of a pizza. Helping students realize how often they use math may make it less intimidating!

  6. Percentages is a math concept used daily, especially for women in shopping. When a sale is going on, we have to calculate what 20% off a 35.99 shirt would be if we want to see if were getting a good deal or not. I do it a lot now in at the store to work on my mental math.

  7. Math is so important in everyday life. I have not yet encountered a job where I did not use math. Also, to understand math on a deeper level is a huge asset to any job. It helps with problem solving. Problem solving in the workplace is essential to success.
